How to Spot a Daily Apartment Rental Scam in Bakirkoy
The most effective protection against a rental scam is to verify the address, the contact line and the conditions before any money changes hands. A price far below comparable listings, pressure to act quickly and being pushed towards a payment link sent by message are the most common warning signs.
The advice below is general, and you can use it on any listing you are looking at. At the end we show how to run exactly the same checks with us.
Warning signs of a fake listing
| Warning sign | Why it is suspicious |
|---|---|
| A price far below similar listings | A common bait for collecting a quick payment |
| “Someone else is asking about it, send the deposit now” | It removes the time you need to think and check |
| No full address given, “we will tell you when you arrive” | A real apartment's address is not a secret |
| No phone calls, messages only | It makes it hard to know who you are dealing with |
| A payment link is sent and card details are requested | It can lead to your card details being taken |
| The payee's name does not match the listing | It is unclear where the money is going |
One of these signs on its own does not always mean a scam. But if two or three appear together, stop and check.
Six checks before you pay
- Verify the address. Ask for the full address and check the street and the building on a map. If the address is no more than a neighbourhood name, do not go further until it is clear.
- Talk on the phone. A short conversation quickly shows whether the person on the other end really knows the apartment. Ask concrete questions: apartment type, how many people it sleeps, check-in time.
- Question the photos. Look at whether the same photos appear in listings in other cities or under different names. A reverse image search costs you a couple of minutes.
- Get the conditions in writing. Dates, total amount, payment method and cancellation or change terms should arrive in a written message.
- Check the payee's name. If you are sending a bank transfer or EFT, make sure the payee name matches the details in the written confirmation.
- Keep card details out of links. Typing a card number and security code into a link that arrived by message is one of the known routes to card fraud.
Questions that verify what you are booking
A genuine business answers these clearly and consistently. If the answers are vague, or change every time you ask, be cautious:
- What is the full address of the apartment — which street and which building?
- Does the building have a lift, and are there security cameras?
- What are the check-in and check-out times, and is ID required at check-in?
- How much is the total, and which payment methods do you accept?
- If I pay by bank transfer, what name will the payee have?
- What are the cancellation and change conditions, and can you send them in writing?
The building itself is a trust signal
Avoiding a scam is the first step; feeling safe throughout your stay matters just as much. Especially if you arrive late at night, or are staying with children or on your own, ask about the building too:
- Security cameras: they let you come and go with an easy mind.
- Lift: makes it easier to get upstairs with suitcases, a pushchair or an older family member.
- Full address and map: seeing the building on a map before you set off makes a late-night arrival quicker to navigate.
- A line that answers: a number that picks up when you call on arrival or during your stay is the most practical reassurance there is.
A business that answers these questions comfortably is also showing that it really knows its own apartment.
How to protect your personal details
In Türkiye, guests' ID details are registered for every stay, which is why being asked for ID at check-in is normal. Even so, do not share ID or card details by message until you are sure who you are writing to. An easy way to tell whether an account really belongs to the business is to call the number in the listing and speak to someone.
If the apartment does not match the listing
One form of scam is an apartment that exists but turns out different from what was described. To avoid it:
- See the apartment type and guest capacity in the written confirmation before you book.
- Ask about the amenities that matter to you one by one: kitchen, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, lift.
- If something does not match when you arrive, tell the business before you settle in.
If you think you have been scammed
- If you paid by card, call your bank immediately.
- If you sent a bank transfer or EFT, report the situation to your own bank.
- Keep screenshots of the messages, the listing and the receipt.
- Report it to the police or the public prosecutor.
The sooner you act, the better your bank's chances of doing something about it.

Common questions
Is it safe to send a deposit for a daily apartment?
Send a deposit only after you have verified the address, the contact line and the conditions, and only to an account whose name matches the written confirmation. If you are being hurried, stop and check.
Is it normal to be asked for ID at check-in?
Yes. Guests' ID details are registered for accommodation in Türkiye, so a passport is requested at check-in; Turkish citizens can show their T.C. national ID card instead.
How do I verify a message that claims to come from you?
Call the phone number on the contact page and ask; the line is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Bookings are made through this phone and WhatsApp line, and you never need to share card details online.
